On 20 September 2026, 48,511 people filled Eden Park, rugby's home ground, for the Warriors against Newcastle. It was the biggest crowd rugby league has ever drawn in New Zealand, on the paddock where the All Blacks don't lose. It sold out in about a day and a half, and there wasn't a single All Black on the field.
So is rugby in a fair fight for that crowd, and for the kids in it? New Zealand Rugby's own summit paper calls league "a well organised, well-funded competitor". That's two findings wearing one coat. The money is real: every NRL club gets about A$17–18 million a year, and the NRL's TV deal is worth more than A$400 million a year. But the Warriors' crowds sat flat for years while that money climbed, then filled within three years of the club coming home. What changed? They came home, they got good, and they turned up. The Warriors' community foundation has been into 556 schools since 2021.
The All Blacks' own review of 2025 counted three high-school visits. To be fair, that's their own count, and the provinces and clubs do their own work in schools. But it leaves my question: if it was your call at New Zealand Rugby on Monday morning, what is the first thing you would ask of the men who have worn that black jersey? Tell me below. And if I've got a number wrong, tell me with a source and I'll pin the correction.
Next time: one more line on that page, the one with an investor's name on it.
