Chapter Twenty-Three of The Architect's Echo, told whole. The sea has stopped counting. Four days, then five, the water standing over the bar and not going back, and the camp on the new ground watching the thing that has counted one a day for a hundred years hold its breath. Lyra goes out on the bar and asks it why. The sea tells her the truth: it has no place to put what it counts. A count that nobody keeps is not a count, and it will not count into nothing again. There is a place that keeps, a flat room with a book and four headings at the head of the page, and a keeper cut the fourth one for it three days ago and cannot say it, because a heading is a promise and the sea cannot see the page. The teller cannot go into the flat. The keeper cannot leave it. The only road between them is the fog at the seam, and the only thing that crosses it is a voice, said out loud, once, standing, where the flat can hear. So Lyra carries what the sea is, east, to a town that has learned to say things out loud on purpose, and on the road she meets a boy carrying a name he never says. The keeper cuts the word and says it at the seam, and the fog brings it back, and Lyra walks it west to the water and says it where she was counted, standing in the sea, with her hand flat on the water. That is the whole road, run from two ends: the keeper keeps, and the teller carries. This is Chapter Twenty-Three, complete and uncut, read in Phoebe Ward's voice.
