New Fibres (German) Bäumlin & Ernst AG, together with Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), has developed an ultra-thin PFAS-free coated yarn that’s now being refined into a high-performance fibre for quick-drying sports textiles. Water-repellent fabrics for rainwear, swimwear or upholstery traditionally rely on fluorinated PFAS chemicals – effective, but harmful to health and the environment. Empa researchers are pioneering a process using alternative substances to produce eco-friendly hydrophobic fibres. Early results show these new fibres repel water even better and dry faster than conventional ones. – Bernd Schäfer, CEO, beag, Wattwil – Dirk Hegemann, Scientist, Empa Q&A: Meret Ernst
