US Bombers at Fairford, Brize Norton Families Day flypasts + RARE Mig-17 & Turbo Firecat at Cardiff

A real mixed bag of aviation interest today from different areas as this weekend sees the airshow season properly kicking off with events including the Midlands Air Festival at Ragley Hall and the Torbay English Riviera Airshow as well as Shuttleworth Wings and Wheels! We begin todays coverage with a return to RAF Fairford, the first visit in a while and the first visit since the disappointing but somewhat expected news that this years Royal International Air Tattoo will not being going ahead as previously advertised, given world events and the continuation of USAF bombers basing at Fairford. It was interesting to take a walk around and see the various B-1B Lancers and B-52 Stratofortress bombers still parked around on base while hostilities in Iran are currently on hold as President Trump holds meetings to make his 'final determination' on a potential deal, and it was a fairly quiet morning at the base, with only one B-52 which had departed early before I arrived and a Kalitta Air 747 which we see departing in the early afternoon. I then headed over to RAF Brize Norton which was hosting its private families day and had booked flypasts from the World famous Royal Airforce Aerobatic Team the RAF Red Arrows, an Atlas Air 747 inbound to Fairford, and RAF Atlas landing at Brize as well as a pair of Typhoons from RAF Coningsby, all of which made a pass over Brize with the Reds and Typhoon pair transiting down to Exeter for the evening displays over Torbay tonight. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Hurricane and Spitfire were also on route but I had to push on for our final destination. The final scenes are filmed at Cardiff Airport, which this weekend is hosting a pair of real aviation rarities in conjunction with the Midlands Air Festival, FUBAR Aviation LTD MiG-17F registration SP-MIL, the only airworthy MiG-17 in Europe built in 1958 and back in the skies after 36 years. The Lim-5 is the Polish licensed build of the famous Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 jet fighter from the Cold War and played an important role in the Polish Air Force for many years. The FUBAR Aviation aircraft made its maiden flight in April 2026 following an extensive restoration and is currently the only flying MiG-17/Lim-5 aircraft in Europe. Traffic meant I missed its departure but seeing it coming racing back from Ragley Hall this evening and taxiing back to its stand was a real privilage! Also seen parked next to the MiG is Conair S-2FT Turbo Firecat F-AYFT, one of only two airworthy examples left, this airframe was originally built in 1959 as a Grumman S-2 submarine hunter for the US Navy, before it was later converted into a Firecat in 1985 by Conair Aviation, and although not flying today, it will be operating out of Cardiff on Saturday and Sunday to display over Ragley Hall.
