Who Lived in Mecca Before Islam? The Evidence May Surprise You | Dr. Ilkka Lindstedt

Who lived in Mecca and Medina before Islam—and what happened to their religious communities after Muhammad? Grab his books here - https://link.amazon/B0bVikvFl Dr. Ilkka Lindstedt joins Derek Lambert on MythVision to explore the Jews, Christians, and other religious groups who inhabited these towns during the sixth and seventh centuries. Drawing on his 2025 article, The Religious Groups of Mecca and Medina in the Sixth and Seventh Centuries CE, we examine a religious landscape more diverse than the familiar story of pagan Arabia might suggest. Using inscriptions, the Quran, Arabic poetry, and later historical accounts, Lindstedt argues that monotheism was already widespread before Muhammad—and that Jewish and Christian communities persisted in the region long after his death. In this livestream, we’ll discuss: • The evidence for Jews and Christians in Mecca and Medina before Islam. • The Kaaba’s role as a pilgrimage site before Muhammad. • Medina’s significant Jewish population and religious life. • Whether some early followers of Muhammad retained earlier religious identities. • Claims about conversion, expulsion, and the survival of religious minorities. • What contemporary evidence can tell us—and where the sources remain uncertain. Was the rise of Islam a sudden religious break, or a more gradual transformation within an already diverse world? Join us as we examine Lindstedt’s reconstruction, competing interpretations, and the evidence behind them.
