Economics is a social science that studies the production, distribution, and consumption of scarce resources in order to satisfy the unlimited needs and desires of human beings. It is often defined as the "science of scarcity" because it arises fundamentally from the existence of limited resources in the face of growing needs.
Economics is divided into two main branches: microeconomics, which examines the behavior of individuals, firms, and specific product markets; and macroeconomics, which analyzes the economy as a whole, focusing on growth, inflation, unemployment, and monetary and fiscal policies.
The discipline is built upon several fundamental concepts, most notably: supply and demand (which determine market prices); efficiency and resource allocation; opportunity cost (what is forgone when a decision is made); and incentives that guide the behavior of individuals and institutions.
Economics aims to understand financial and social phenomena, assist governments, businesses, and individuals in making rational decisions, and achieve sustainable development and economic stability. It also addresses real-world issues—such as poverty, unemployment, inflation, and public debt—and proposes practical solutions for them.
Today, economics serves as an essential tool in public policymaking and business management, given its direct impact on the lives of societies and the well-being of individuals.
