For 55 years, a man named Henry Molaison woke up every morning with no idea what day it was, and met the same scientist for the first time again and again. So why can't some people make new memories? There are four pieces to every memory, and the last one explains why he could still learn without knowing it.
This is the story of a 1953 brain operation, a seahorse-shaped part of the brain called the hippocampus, a musician who writes in his diary that he has just woken up for the first time, a mirror-drawing test that revealed a second kind of memory, and how a brain was sliced into thousands of pieces and shown live to the world.
