The Sendai Daikannon is the tallest statue of a goddess in Japan and the ninth-tallest statue in the world. The monument itself is 92 meters (302 ft) tall, but the pedestal brings its total height to 100 meter (330 ft). It portrays a woman, the bodhisattva Byakue Kannon (white-robed Kannon) holding the cintamani gem (a wish-fulfilling jewel resembling a pearl) in her hand. Inside there are many large statues of Buddha and mythical kings and 108 Buddhas in total, displayed in wood cabinets on 12 levels, 8 per level.
When I read about this, of course I had to go check it out! Are you ready to join me to Sendai?
