Derry Girls Season 1, Episodes 5 & 6 ... And we've already reached the Season 1 finale! In Episode 5, the Quinns are determined to escape Derry before the Twelfth of July Orange parades begin, with Clare, Michelle and James joining the family on their trip to County Donegal. Aunt Sarah's newfound interest in tarot cards predicts disaster, Granda Joe's navigation sends them directly into the parade they're trying to avoid, and things get considerably more complicated when they discover an unexpected passenger hiding in the boot of their car. Episode 6 brings us back to Our Lady Immaculate, where Erin becomes editor of the school magazine and discovers an anonymous story written by a lesbian student. Her decision to publish it puts her directly at odds with Sister Michael, but the identity of the anonymous writer leads to a much more personal revelation for the group. Meanwhile, Orla prepares an unforgettable step-aerobics routine for the school talent show, Gerry desperately tries to recover Mary's birthday photos, and Aunt Sarah finds herself with a new admirer. Written by series creator Lisa McGee and directed by Michael Lennox, these episodes star Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin, Nicola Coughlan as Clare, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as Michelle, Louisa Harland as Orla and Dylan Llewellyn as James, alongside Tara Lynne O'Neill as Mary, Tommy Tiernan as Gerry, Ian McElhinney as Granda Joe, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah and Siobhán McSweeney as Sister Michael. Episode 5 also features Terence Keeley as Emmett, while Episode 6 features Jamie Beamish as Ciaran. That Season 1 ending really drives home what makes Derry Girls special. These characters are concerned with school magazines, crushes, family arguments and talent shows while growing up against the backdrop of the Troubles. The way the finale moves between the girls joyfully supporting Orla and their families silently watching another tragedy unfold on the news is such a striking reminder that both realities are happening at the same time. I've had such a great time with this first season.
