Why German Tank Crews Feared This Sherman

Standard Shermans needed five tanks to take down one Tiger — and the crews knew the math. But one Sherman variant made German tank crews check every barrel twice before firing. This is the story of the Sherman Firefly, the British 17-pounder conversion that could kill a Tiger from a mile away. Normandy, 1944. Allied tankers called their Shermans reliable, fast — and outgunned. The 75mm gun bounced off a Tiger's frontal armor at combat range, while the German 88 could open a Sherman like a tin can from beyond retaliation distance. The British answer was a brutal piece of improvisation: cram the massive 17-pounder anti-tank gun into a Sherman turret never designed for it. The result was cramped, deafening, slow to reload — and it changed the arithmetic of every tank engagement in Normandy. With APDS ammunition the Firefly punched through armor no Allied tank gun had touched before. German gunners learned to scan for the telltale long barrel and knock out the Fireflies first, and British crews answered with painted countershading to disguise the barrel's length. On August 8, 1944, during Operation Totalize, a 23-year-old gunner named Joe Ekins — in his first tank battle — destroyed three Tigers in twelve minutes. One of them, most historians believe, carried Michael Wittmann, the most famous tank ace of the war. Ekins went home and made shoes for forty years.
