Eighteen men paid to have their faces painted. Nearly four centuries later, we are still looking at them.
Rembrandt's The Night Watch transformed a portrait of Amsterdam's civic guards into a scene alive with movement, light and tension. But what did its patrons want to be remembered for — and why did the painting outlive their ambitions?
This KROMOS documentary follows three connected stories: the citizens who commissioned the picture, the artistic choices that made it extraordinary, and the generations who saved it from destruction. We look closely at Captain Frans Banninck Cocq, Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch, the glowing girl, the musketeers and the shield of names. We also trace the canvas through its cutting in 1715, wartime evacuation and repeated attacks.
The Night Watch asks a question that reaches beyond the seventeenth century: what gives us a lasting place in memory?
