In October 1895, a 14-year-old American girl in Europe wrote to her mother that if only she were a little older, she might "catch" the Duke of Marlborough. It took her 26 years. In June 1921, aged 40, Gladys Deacon married him in Paris and became mistress of Blenheim Palace, a house of about 187 rooms restored with Vanderbilt railroad money. In 1928 she had her own eyes painted across the ceiling of its portico, and in 1930 her face was cast in lead on two sphinxes in its gardens. In 1931 the Duke walked out. By August 1933 he had cut her money, her electricity and her servants, removal vans had cleared her out of Blenheim, and three men claiming to be his detectives had locked themselves in the basement of their London house. He died in 1934 before any divorce, and she lived 43 more years as a duchess with no house at all.
