Whose stories get told at historic sites, and whose voices have been left out? In this Collaborative Training session, public historian Daniel Sieh examines how dominant narratives shape historical interpretation - and why moving beyond them creates a richer, more accurate understanding for all visitors. This presentation challenges docents-in-training to recognize the patterns and assumptions embedded in traditional storytelling. It offers practical tools for using inquiry-based interpretation to help visitors engage with the full complexity of history.
IN THIS VIDEO:
Defining dominant narratives and how they shape historical understanding
Recognizing dominant narratives in museum spaces, tour scripts, and everyday interpretation
The benefits of moving beyond single-story interpretations for visitors and sites
How inquiry-based methods help visitors question assumptions and explore complexity
Practical strategies for introducing multiple perspectives without overwhelming audiences
Creating interpretive experiences that honor the full range of historical voices and experiences
Why inclusive interpretation strengthens engagement and deepens visitor learning
ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Somerset County Docent Training Program is a collaborative initiative developed by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission in partnership with history-based organizations managing local historic sites. As one of only a handful of collaborative docent training programs in the country, and perhaps the first in New Jersey, this model demonstrates how counties can build sustainable volunteer capacity across multiple sites through shared training, consistent standards, and community partnership.
