Longewala, 1971: one company on a Rajasthan sand dune, a Pakistani tank column, and why the sources still cannot agree on the numbers.
On the night of 4 December 1971, a company of the Punjab Regiment held a border post on a sand dune in the Thar desert, with machine guns, mortars, two recoilless guns on jeeps and a wire fence. A Pakistani armoured column came toward it. By first light the Indian air force had arrived. The tanks were left burning on the sand.
This episode follows the night from the war in the east that started it, through the Pakistani plan and the memoir of one of its own tank officers, to the dune itself: the patrol that heard the column, the wire fence the attackers took for a minefield, the Hunters at dawn, and the argument that followed about whether the Army or the Air Force won it. Almost every number is disputed (men on the post, tanks destroyed, the dead, the size of the Pakistani force), so the video gives the ranges and says whose they are instead of picking one. The archive film shown twice (in the section on the war in the east, and again near the end) is from the 1971 refugee crisis, not footage of the battle.
