Now the Concubines' Quarters inside the Topkapı Palace Harem are finally open to visitors, and I walked through every one of them. This is the part of the Harem nobody has been able to see: the Courtyard of the Imperial Consorts and Concubines, reopened after a six-year restoration. Three consorts' apartments, the concubines' dormitory, the laundry, the kitchen, the bath, even the coffee hearth where their day began. These were the spaces where the women of the Ottoman court actually lived, studied and worked, not the fantasy version you know from Magnificent Century.
