Celebrating My 60th Birthday – An Extraordinary Journey to Everest Base Camp Some birthdays are celebrated with a party. I decided to celebrate my 60th birthday with a journey into the Himalayas – an adventure that would challenge me physically, touch me emotionally, and leave me with memories to last a lifetime. My journey began in Kathmandu, Nepal, followed by a spectacular 40-minute flight to Lukla. Together with my guide, Santosh, I set out on a ten-day trek toward Everest Base Camp, more than 5,300 meters above sea level. The breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas came with challenges I had seriously underestimated. By the third day, in Namche Bazaar, exhaustion had caught up with me, and I decided to hire a porter. Milan joined our little team and became an invaluable companion. Without the dedication, kindness, and encouragement of these two remarkable men, I might never have made it. One of the most touching moments of the journey came through the generosity of friends from around the world. Knowing how exhausted I was, they organized an online fundraiser that made it possible for me to return from Gorak Shep to Lukla by helicopter rather than face another five days of trekking. Their kindness and support meant more to me than words can express. But the adventure didn't end in Nepal. From Kathmandu, I continued to Kuala Lumpur, although an unexpected AirAsia cancellation turned that part of the journey into a rather frustrating experience. Eventually, I made my way to Phuket for some much-needed relaxation, then traveled farther south to Koh Lanta and finally to my beloved Koh Lipe – a little tropical paradise often called the Maldives of Thailand. On my way back to Europe, I spent a week in Bangkok, reconnecting with another meaningful chapter of my life. Twenty years earlier, legendary tattoo artist Jimmy Wong had created a tattoo on my shoulder. To my delight, Jimmy was still working, and over four consecutive evenings, he carefully brought his original artwork back to life with renewed detail and color. It was a wonderful experience to reconnect with the artist and the memories behind it. Looking back, this journey was about so much more than reaching Everest Base Camp. It was about friendship, generosity, perseverance, unexpected encounters, and the extraordinary beauty of being alive. To Santosh, Milan, Jimmy, and all the wonderful friends who supported me along the way – thank you for being part of this unforgettable chapter of my life. Mahalo nui loa for the memories. Some journeys stay with us forever. This was one of them. #EverestBaseCamp #EverestTrek #NepalTrekking #Himalayas #60thBirthday
