📖 Important Definitions & Terminologies
🔹 Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM):
A type of periodic motion in which the restoring force is directly proportional to displacement and acts towards the mean position.
👉 Example: Spring oscillation, simple pendulum (small angle)
🔹 Periodic Motion:
Motion that repeats itself at equal intervals of time.
👉 Example: Earth’s revolution, vibration of tuning fork
🔹 Oscillatory Motion:
A to-and-fro motion about a fixed mean position.
👉 Example: Swing motion, mass-spring system
🔹 Mean Position (Equilibrium Position):
The central position where net force is zero.
🔹 Displacement (x):
Distance of the particle from the mean position at any instant.
🔹 Amplitude (A):
Maximum displacement from the mean position.
👉 Example: Maximum stretch of spring
🔹 Time Period (T):
Time taken to complete one full oscillation.
🔹 Frequency (f):
Number of oscillations per second.
👉 Unit: Hertz (Hz)
🔹 Angular Frequency (ω):
Rate of change of phase in SHM.
👉 Relation: ω = 2πf
🔹 Restoring Force:
Force that brings the system back to equilibrium.
👉 In SHM: F ∝ –x
🔹 Force Constant (k):
Force required to produce unit displacement.
👉 Unit: N/m
🔹 Phase:
The position and direction of motion of a particle at a given instant.
🔹 Phase Difference:
Difference in phase between two oscillating particles.
🔹 Total Path (Total Distance in One Oscillation):
The total distance covered in one complete oscillation.
👉 Total Path = 2A
🔹 Velocity in SHM:
Velocity is maximum at mean position and zero at extreme positions.
🔹 Acceleration in SHM:
Acceleration is directly proportional to displacement and directed towards mean position.
🔹 Energy in SHM:
Total energy remains constant and is the sum of kinetic and potential energy.
🔹 Maximum Velocity:
Occurs at mean position.
🔹 Maximum Acceleration:
Occurs at extreme positions.
