MUSLIMS OF GERMANY | The Hidden Muslim Germany: How 7 Million Muslims Built a New Home |
Germany's Muslim Story is a story of migration, family, identity, faith, and generations. In 1961, Germany opened the door to Turkish workers to help meet a growing labor shortage. Many were expected to stay temporarily and return home. But history took a different path.
Over the decades, families grew, children went to German schools, businesses opened, communities developed, and mosques and Islamic centers became part of everyday life. Today, Germany's Muslim population is diverse, with communities connected to Turkey, the Balkans, the Arab world, South Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, North Africa, and many other parts of the world.
From Berlin's Neukölln to Cologne, Muslim life can be seen not only in mosques, but also in schools, businesses, universities, workplaces, neighborhoods, and family life. For many second- and third-generation Muslims, Germany is not simply a place their grandparents came to work—it is the country where they were born, educated, and are building their future.
This documentary explores the Hidden Muslim Germany, the history of Germany's guest workers, the growth of the Muslim community, the experience of Turkish-German families, and the changing identity of Germany's new Muslim generations.
Why did temporary guest workers become part of Germany's long-term story? How did three generations transform the meaning of home, identity, and belonging?
Watch the full documentary to explore the Germany that exists beyond the images of cars, factories, football, and economic power.
