Winter prep isn’t about making your Layens hive look clean. It’s about making sure the colony is set up for winter.
If your Layens frames are heavily propolized, you may be tempted to scrape everything away, force the frames apart, or make the hive look “neat.”
But here’s the question:
What if some of that propolis is exactly where the bees want it?
🐝 Propolis is part of the bees’ natural way of managing their home. They use it to seal spaces, regulate unwanted airflow, and create the environment they want inside the colony.
But there’s another important part of winter prep for Layens beekeepers:
FRAME SPACING
You need to make sure your frames are properly positioned and manageable going into winter—without unnecessarily destroying the work your bees have already done.
In this video, we’re taking a look at propolis, frame spacing, and getting a Layens hive ready for winter.
👉 Before you scrape. Before you force. Before you “clean up” the hive… take a moment to ask:
Is this really a problem—or is this simply the bees doing what bees do? Winter prep starts with understanding the colony—not fighting it.

More About Us!
Welcome! We’re so glad you are here! We are Sonja and Rob. Our beekeeping journey, not unlike many beekeepers, started with joining our local bee club, reading stacks of material, and seeking support. It wasn’t long before we realized we wanted to pursue a more natural and sustainable approach in our beekeeping. Collecting only local honey bees through swarm trapping and managing them in hives that closely mimicked their natural home, a tree cavity, the formation of Wild Hives LLC and the growth of the Wild Hives Community began.
