The 15 richest countries in the world — and number one is smaller than Central Park. Which is the richest country in the world, ranked by GDP per person (World Bank, 2024)? In this 4K travel video, we count down the 15 richest countries and territories on Earth — from Denmark to Monaco — and ask what each number really buys, and what it doesn't tell you.
We start in Dubai, which many people call the richest city in the world. Yet the United Arab Emirates ranks only 27th. The fifteen places above it are even stranger: an oil nation where about 96 percent of new cars are fully electric (Norway), an island where each household may register only one car (Bermuda), a Caribbean territory with more registered companies than people (the Cayman Islands), a country whose GDP jumped 26 percent in a single year — "leprechaun economics" (Ireland) — and a valley country with no airport and no army that once listed itself on Airbnb (Liechtenstein).
Why is Monaco so rich? At number one, Monaco's GDP per person is about $288,000 — about twenty times the world average — on roughly two square kilometers. It has charged no personal income tax since 1869 (except to French citizens), its own citizens are banned from the Monte Carlo casino's gaming rooms, and only about one in ten people working there actually lives there. That is the twist behind many of the richest countries in the world: GDP per capita measures the money made inside a border, not always the life of the people who live there.
Which of these places would you actually want to live in? Tell us in the comments.
