Burkina Faso is taking its sovereignty agenda into one of the most powerful places in society: THE CLASSROOM.
As part of education reforms for the 2026–2027 academic year, Burkina Faso is pursuing what authorities describe as the “decolonisation of knowledge,” reviewing educational content and placing greater emphasis on Burkinabè history, national values, African perspectives, civic education, science and technology.
But this raises a much bigger question for the entire continent:
WHO SHOULD TELL AFRICA'S STORY?
For generations, African students have often encountered their history through frameworks heavily influenced by colonial education systems.
Now Burkina Faso is challenging that legacy.
From a Pan-African perspective, this is bigger than textbooks.
Education shapes identity.
Education shapes confidence.
Education shapes how young Africans understand their history—and how they imagine their future.
Should other African countries also review their school curricula?
What African history should EVERY African child know before leaving secondary school?
