Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48 IV. Finale (Tema russo): Andante – Allegro con spirito Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) Conductor: Vincent Leung WYK Alumni String Orchestra Recorded by Music Totem Studio at School Hall, Wah Yan College, Kowloon on 3 October 2026 Tchaikovsky composed his Serenade for Strings in C major in the autumn of 1880. Written from an intense "inner compulsion", it stood in stark contrast to the bombastic 1812 Overture he was composing at the exact same time. While the first two movements pay a graceful, elegant homage to his musical idol, Mozart, the final two movements pivot toward deep Russian romanticism and vibrant nationalism. The Finale (Tema russo): Andante – Allegro con spirito provides a stark contrast, bursting with the vivid colours of Russian folk heritage. The movement opens with a slow, muted introduction where Tchaikovsky smoothly transitions from the key of the Elegia by introducing a traditional Volga "hauling song," which softly moves from the upper strings down to the lower register. The mutes are then cast aside as the Allegro con spirito launches into a lively, energetic dance tune native to Moscow. This high-spirited dance is juxtaposed against a broader, more lyrical second theme that is distinctly Russian in character. In a brilliant stroke of structural architecture, just as the momentum reaches its peak, Tchaikovsky brings back the majestic, sweeping theme from the very beginning of the entire Serenade's first movement. Having tied the entire work together in a perfect circle, the tempo accelerates into a breathless, celebratory coda that brings the Serenade to a thrilling, triumphant close.
