The first Doric city-states were founded in the 8th century BC. Golden Age The city of Rhodes was established in 408 BC by the cities of Ialyssos, Kamiros, and Lindos. The city became a major trading center and cultural hub, and was home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Roman Empire Rhodes became a province of the Roman Empire, but retained its importance as a trade and cultural center. Byzantine Empire Rhodes became part of the Byzantine Empire. Dark Ages Rhodes fell into decline during the Dark Ages. Knights of St John The Knights of St John took over Rhodes in 1306 and ruled for two centuries. They built a fortified city and transformed Rhodes into a major maritime power again. Ottoman Empire Rhodes was conquered by Suleyman the Magnificent in 1523 and became part of the Ottoman Empire. Italian rule The Italians displaced the Turks in 1912, and the minarets were removed from the Christian places of worship that had been converted into mosques by the Ottomans. The churches were never re-consecrated and are now museums. Cultural significance Rhodes' strategic location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa gave it a significant role in history.
