Seeing her photograph again brought a flood of memories, accompanied by both comfort and a quiet sense of loss. This fragile boundary between remembering and forgetting forms the emotional core of the piece. Rather than telling a linear story, the work explores memory as a fluid psychological state—one that shifts between clarity and obscurity, presence and absence. Musical ideas appear as fragments, recur in transformed forms, and gradually fade, mirroring the way memories surface unpredictably and change over time. The string quartet’s shared timbral world allows these gestures to pass seamlessly between voices, creating a collective act of remembering. The piece is also shaped by my cultural identity as a Hakka composer. Abstract elements drawn from the ritual structure of the Hakka Three Offerings Ceremony (San Xian Li) inform the music’s sense of pacing, restraint, and layered time, without direct quotation. Through this integration of personal memory and cultural resonance, Fading reflects on how those we love may fade from immediate recall, yet remain deeply present within us. Taiwanese-born Canadian Hsiu-Ping Patrick Wu is a composer, violinist, and multimedia artist who is constantly on the search for musical language that bridges his multicultural identity. Patrick’s music ranged from his own style of neo-romanticism to avant-garde soundscapes, fusing theatrical elements and improvisational techniques. https://www.patrickwumusic.com/
