This is how people live in Sri Lanka: farmers keep watch from treehouses all night, and a wild elephant can flatten a season's crop before dawn. About 7,400 wild elephants roam the island. A fig tree planted in 288 BC still draws millions of pilgrims, the king who built the lake at Minneriya is still worshipped as a god, and astrologers set the minute the New Year begins. We follow every system that keeps life going: some thirty thousand ancient reservoirs, the gem pits of Ratnapura, tea pluckers with a daily target of eighteen kilos, men fishing from poles in the surf, and the fuel QR codes of the 2022 crisis. And we ask how nearly twenty-two million people make it work on one small island.
