BIRC 2026: Why Are Indian Rice Shipments Rejected? | MRLs, Quality & Compliance Explained
Indian rice can clear quality checks at the mill, complete its documentation and leave the port yet still face rejection when it reaches the destination market. So, why do buyers reject Indian rice shipments?
The reasons can involve pesticide residues, Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs), contamination, sampling methods, laboratory testing, certification, documentation, traceability and differences in destination-market requirements. A problem detected at the border may have started much earlier at the farm, procurement, storage, drying, milling or testing stage.
At Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026, the knowledge session “Why Buyers Reject Rice Shipments: Quality, Certification and Compliance” will examine these issues through data, documented cases and industry expertise. BIRC 2026 will be held from 23rd to 25th October at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The discussion will also focus on a practical question: Can exporters identify compliance risks before a shipment leaves India?
Topics include MRLs, pre-shipment testing, sampling, certification, documentation and traceability. The session is expected to contribute to the BIRC 2026 Rice Export Compliance Alert, highlighting emerging risks and practical steps for exporters. India exported around 20.19 million metric tonnes of rice in 2024–25, according to the APEDA data cited in the script, making quality and compliance increasingly important as India serves diverse international markets.
