India chased 226 against New Zealand in Christchurch to pull off their highest-ever successful T20I run chase. An incredible win—but another game that leaves serious questions about the bowling. Sanju Samson’s 67 off 33 balls set up the chase, Shreyas Iyer contributed 42 off 28, and Naman Dhir smashed an unbeaten 42 off just 15 deliveries to take India home. India finished on 230/6 in 19.4 overs, winning the first T20I at Hagley Oval by four wickets. There is so much to celebrate about this batting line-up. The intent, the firepower and the belief that even a target of 226 is within reach. But how often should they have to do this? New Zealand piled up 225/4, powered by Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 82 off 40 balls. All five Indian bowlers conceded 40 or more runs each—the first time that has happened to India in men’s T20I cricket. Another 200-plus total conceded. Another huge task left to the batters. In this video, I break down India’s record chase, the batting performances that made it possible, and why the bowling concerns deserve attention even after a memorable win. How much of this is simply modern T20 cricket—and how much is a problem India need to fix? What would you change about the bowling attack? Let me know in the comments.
