In 1936, one sentence in the preface to one of the bestselling self-help books ever pinned a number on a Harvard professor who never said it. In this video we trace the "ten percent of your brain" line back to its first appearance. William James told a room of philosophers in 1906 that most people use only a small part of their resources, but he never gave a number. Thirty years later, Lowell Thomas's preface to Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People pinned "ten per cent" on James, and the number never let go. From there it picked up "silent" brain regions, a line credited to Einstein with no record he said it, and a long run of courses, films and apps selling the missing ninety percent. Then we look at what the brain actually does: brain scans, energy use, injuries, and a 2011 doorway experiment that explains why you forget what you came into the kitchen for. Your brain was never idle. The locked-away better version of you was just the pitch. If you've ever felt like a sharper version of you was locked away somewhere, waiting for the right key, this one's for you. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:00 – The door you've never found 1:31 – A number nobody said 6:14 – What your brain actually does 7:48 – The stranger beside you 🔔 Subscribe for deep dives on the psychology behind everyday behavior. #BrainMyths #Psychology #SelfImprovement #Documentary
