Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto

Toronto's urban wilderness is beautiful - nothing fancy, but lots of amazing views of the Toronto skyline. I took my bike on the GO train to Union Station, and then rode down Bay Street (there is a bike lane on the road) to the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the waterfront. That's where I turned onto the Martin Goodman Trail, a paved bike path that is separated from the road. This trail takes you to Tommy Thompson Park, and beyond. It is 7 km from Union Station to the park entrance (one way). There is a lot of construction in this area, and there was a detour sign at Cherry Street. In May 2023 it was not necessary to detour here - just continue on the bike trail to Cherry Beach and then along to Tommy Thompson Park. UPDATE: by May 2024 the bridge over the shipping channel is under construction so you do need to take the detour along Commissioner's to Tommy Thompson. Another option is to rent a bike at Union Station or at the entrance to Tommy Thompson Park. There is a small parking lot at the entrance to the park, and some people were parking on the road. This is a very popular spot on weekends, so the parking lot may fill up. Also, the bikes might be all rented. There are rental bikes at Cherry Beach, and parking too. Tommy Thompson Park is quite large. There is a paved road from the entrance to the lighthouse, and it is 5 km one way. This is a flat and accessible roadway, except there are small speed bumps along the way. There is another mostly paved road that goes around the ponds. And there are lots of walking trails where bikes are not permitted. This park is a sensitive bird nesting area, so dogs are not permitted. There really are a lot of birds in this park.
