What should a quarterback do when a defender blocks the throwing lane?
Don't force the throw. Move your feet and find a better angle.
In this QB development drill, Coach Dakota introduces a walking rusher with raised arms to help quarterbacks practice adjusting their throwing position when pressure gets in the way.
The quarterback knows the intended target is running a dig route, but the rusher steps directly into the throwing window.
WHAT THIS DRILL TEACHES
RECOGNIZE PRESSURE — Identify when a defender is blocking the throwing lane.
MOVE YOUR FEET — Adjust your position instead of forcing a pass through the defender.
CREATE THROWING WINDOWS — Find a better angle to deliver the football.
ADJUST YOUR ARM ANGLE — Recognize when the throw requires a different release.
STAY ON TARGET — Keep track of where the receiver is moving.
EXECUTE UNDER PRESSURE — Make adjustments while maintaining control.
Coach Dakota also reinforces an important offensive detail: receivers must be properly set before the snap to avoid a false start.
Great quarterbacks don't just know where to throw. They know how to create the opportunity to make that throw.
