BASTAR — WHERE TRADITION MEETS THE WILD What if I told you there is a place in Chhattisgarh where dense forests, powerful waterfalls, tribal traditions, beautiful handicrafts and warm local communities come together? This is Bastar. I travelled through the tribal heartland of Chhattisgarh and experienced a side of India that deserves to be explored more. From the vibrant tribal culture and traditional handicrafts to the forests, wildlife, temples and breathtaking landscapes, Bastar offers a completely different travel experience. My journey took me towards Jagdalpur, the gateway to exploring the Bastar region. From Raipur, the road journey to Jagdalpur takes roughly 6 hours, making the journey itself an experience through the changing landscapes of Chhattisgarh. One of the biggest highlights of the journey was Chitrakote Waterfalls, formed by the Indravati River. Its spectacular horseshoe-shaped cascade is one of Bastar's most famous natural attractions and is often called the “Niagara of India.” But Bastar isn't only about waterfalls. It is about the people, traditions and culture. You can experience traditional tribal art, Dhokra metalwork, handicrafts, jewellery, local markets, folk music and distinctive cultural traditions. The Bison-Horn Maria tradition, for example, is known for its striking ceremonial headdresses made using materials including bamboo, peacock feathers and cowrie shells. The region also offers places such as Kanger Valley National Park, Kotumsar Caves, Danteshwari Temple, Bastar Palace, Dalpat Sagar and several waterfalls and natural attractions. What stayed with me the most was the feeling of being welcomed into a completely different environment — surrounded by nature, traditional art, local life and the incredible cultural diversity of Bastar.
