🎣 The Angler's Vault: https://anglersvaultguide.app/walleye There is one number that decides whether your walleye night is a limit or a long sit, and it is printed on your phone for free before you leave the house. It is not the moon. Most men check the moon. Full, new, a little chart with the good hours shaded in. I checked it for twenty years, and I have the notebooks to prove it did nothing for me. The number is the wind: how hard it is blowing, in miles per hour, and which bank it is blowing onto. Old walleye men call it the walleye chop. 🌕 WHAT THE MOON DOES AND DOES NOT DO: a bright calm full moon lights the shallows and can push the bite a little deeper and later. That is real and small, and a cloud bank erases it. The shaded hours in the tables were built for saltwater, where the moon moves a tide. On a lake there is no tide. 💨 WHY THE WIND DECIDES: a choppy surface breaks up the light, so the shallows get dim even at midday and a walleye, who sees in dim water better than a minnow, moves up to use it. And the wind pushes the plankton onto one bank, the minnows follow, and the walleye follow them. 📊 THE SCALE: 0 to 5, dead calm, fish deep and slow and wait for dark. 5 to 8, the chop starts. 8 to 15, the number, the night you cancel dinner for. 15 to 25, still on, with a heavier jig and a plan. Over 25, stay home. 🗺️ WHERE ON THE BANK: the point sticking into the wind, the windward face of an island and the rock bar off it, the outside of the weed edge, and the seam where rock turns to sand. ⚠️ WHEN THE NUMBER LIES: the hard northwest wind right behind a cold front, a wind that muddies the whole lake, and wind blowing onto a bare sand beach. 🌡️ The wind decides the night all year, but it stops deciding the bank at a certain temperature. Through the fifties a windy bank is a full one. As the water drops through the forties the baitfish leave the shallows for the deep basins, and the wind moves the walleye along the deep edges instead of onto the rock. A lake in Ohio and a lake in Minnesota are three weeks apart on the same date, which is why the Walleye Book is written by water temperature instead of by month: ten bands, and in each one, where she holds, where the big ones hold apart from the school, how deep, how fast, what to throw, and what changes from the bank. Six species books — walleye, yellow perch, crappie, bluegill, bass and catfish — 363 pages, thirty-seven dollars, one payment, thirty-day guarantee. Each book used to sell for fifty dollars on its own. The discount runs through the end of October: 👉 https://anglersvaultguide.app/walleye ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 One number, and it is not the moon 1:39 What the moon does, and does not do 4:57 Why the wind decides 7:42 Three numbers on your phone 8:49 Reading the water: the mud line and the foam 10:24 Why fall wind is the strongest 11:21 What the wind piles up 12:49 The summer of two columns 15:47 The scale: from calm to stay home 18:07 The hundred yards that matter 19:35 Fishing into the wind 21:16 A windy afternoon is a dusk 22:19 River and reservoir: the same number, a different bank 23:33 When the wind dies or flips 25:03 When the number lies 26:18 Where the shore wins 27:24 ⚠️ When the wind stops mattering 29:14 The whole video in one minute 30:24 What that notebook taught me 30:47 Your turn 🎣 FREE TIP NOT IN THE VIDEO: every time you leave the ramp, take a screenshot of the wind page on your weather app, and after the trip take one photo of what you caught, or of the empty cooler. They sit next to each other in your camera roll with the date on both. After one season you have your own two columns without ever opening a notebook, and your lake will tell you its own number.
