The US Geological Survey says America imported 92% of the potash it used in 2025 — and over 2021–2024, 79% of those imports came from Canada. Canada produced about 15 million tonnes (K2O) last year, 30 times US output, almost all of it from 11 mines in Saskatchewan.
When President Trump put 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods from August 19, 2026, potash and other fertilizers were left off the list. Potash was added to America's critical minerals list in November 2025. Meanwhile Nutrien sold a record 7.45 million tonnes in the first half of 2026 — with North American sales down and offshore sales, led by Latin America, up.
