Puṇṇiya Sutta, “Discourse to the Venerable Puṇṇiya” from the Anguttara Nikāya or The Numerical Discourses (AN 8.82).
Today's sutta exploration session was devoted to the Puṇṇiya Sutta (“The Venerable Puṇṇiya”), where Lord Buddha gives a stupendous response to the Ven. Puṇṇiya's question, on how to approach and listen to the Dhamma, so as to stay inspired, motivated, interested, and truly understand the Dhamma. Lord Buddha then gives eight ingredients that are necessary for the student to have and demonstrate and carry oneself by, in order to truly penetrate the Dhamma.
These eight ingredients are: 1) approaching the teacher to listen to a Dhamma talk, with faith, 2) doing so with genuine humility and trust, 3) asking questions to the teacher to clear up any doubts, 4) attentively listening to the teacher's responses, 5) making effort to retain and memorize what the teacher shares, 6) investigating the depth of meaning of the Dhamma that the teacher shares, 7) incorporating the Dhamma into his/her life, to know and experience the truth, and 8) dedicate oneself fully to living a life according to the Dhamma. These eight ingredients, or gradations, just like the layers of an onion, shed light on the attitude and conduct with which a genuine student, whether lay or monastic, should approach the practice, to make the best of it and thereby attain the supreme goal of freedom from suffering.
In the Q & A section, Bhante addressed a question on how to bring playfulness and thereby joy into the practice, without which Nibbāna cannot be attained.
Please NOTE: The Dhamma is Priceless, hence it is not and cannot be for sale!
