Diving Nusa Penida — Mola Mola, Manta Rays and an Eagle Ray in One Week

One week of diving around Nusa Penida, filmed between 1 and 8 October at Toyapakeh, Crystal Bay and Manta Point. At Toyapakeh, the Marine Fauna Foundation Nusa Penida runs its surveys on a marked quadrat on the reef — ropes, pegs and a measuring frame, right where we dive every day. A few metres away, an octopus balled up and camouflaged on the coral, one eye open. Two turtles: one feeding with its beak deep in the reef, the other being cleaned, tail up. At Crystal Bay, a school of barracuda, a banded sea snake hunting along an orange sponge wall, and then the Mola Mola — it came in over the reef and passed in front of us. The Mola Mola was at 12 m, in 22 °C water — the third one we saw that day at Crystal Bay. The other two were deeper and colder, 25 m and 17 °C, on the same dive. At Manta Point, several reef mantas, including a black one with remoras, and a spotted eagle ray in a long close pass.
