Living Beyond is a testimonial documentary that journeys through the lives of people living with Ankylosing Spondylitis. The documentary unfolds stories of extraordinary human spirit. Ankylosing Spondylitis Indian Federation (ASIF) is a patient-led non-profit organization in India that supports individuals living with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints (the joints connecting the spine to the pelvis). It belongs to a group of conditions called axial spondyloarthritis and can cause persistent back pain, stiffness, and reduced spinal mobility. Symptoms typically begin in early adulthood and are often worse in the morning or after periods of inactivity, improving with exercise. Some individuals may also experience fatigue, inflammation of the eyes (uveitis), or pain in other joints. Although the exact cause is unknown, genetic factors, particularly the HLA-B27 gene, are associated with the condition. There is currently no definitive cure, but treatment with regular exercise, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and, when necessary, biologic therapies can help control symptoms and maintain mobility. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are essential to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of spinal complications. ASIF works to unite patients, raise awareness, reduce diagnosis delays, and advocate for better access to treatment and government support. The documentary is released as part of its 12th Anniversary celebrations held at Amala Institute of Medical Science Thrissur.
