For two million years, it rained without a single dry day — and by the time the storm finally cleared, the undisputed king of this planet was gone, replaced by a creature nobody had ever bothered to watch.
234 million years ago, every continent on Earth was fused into one single supercontinent, Pangea, and its center was a desert bigger than anything alive today has ever seen. Ruling that desert was Postosuchus, a five-meter, crocodile-faced apex predator that had gone unchallenged for longer than most species even manage to exist. Hiding in his shadow, barely noticed, were small two-meter reptiles nobody expected to survive the week, let alone inherit the world.
Then, on the far side of the supercontinent, in the stretch of crust that would one day become Canada and Alaska, the ground split open. The Wrangellia eruptions released billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the sky, triggering a runaway greenhouse feedback loop that pushed global temperatures up by four to seven degrees Celsius and saturated the atmosphere with water vapor until it had nowhere left to go but down. The result was the Carnian Pluvial Episode: two million uninterrupted years of rain that drowned a desert empire that had stood for tens of millions of years.
The giants fell first. Seed ferns rotted, dicynodont herds starved, and the apex predators that depended on them followed. In the wreckage, four quiet biological advantages let one overlooked group of small, upright reptiles out-walk, out-grow, out-eat, and out-breathe everything the old world had produced — and open a reign that would last one hundred and fifty million years. The proof is still sitting in the rock today, in Arizona and across parts of Europe, in a red-black-red scar you can put your hand on.
