Holy, Holy, Holy: The God We’ve Forgotten

What would you do if you came face to face with God? Most of us imagine a warm reunion—a God who comforts us, validates us, and gives us what we want. But when Isaiah encountered the living God, his response wasn't casual confidence. He cried, “Woe to me! I am ruined!” In Isaiah 6, we see the holiness of God on full display: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.” God's holiness isn't simply one attribute among many. It shapes everything about who He is. His love is holy. His justice is holy. His authority is holy. And when we truly encounter His holiness, we see ourselves differently. But Isaiah's story doesn't end with shame. A burning coal from the altar touches his lips, and the angel declares, “Your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” The God who exposes our sin is also the God who provides our cleansing. Through Jesus, we don't have to hide from a holy God. We can come near, with reverence and with confidence. Because when we truly encounter God's holiness, we are changed.
