“This Bothers Me” is a song I wrote about someone I know who struggles with being very self-centered in their relationships. What makes this situation interesting is that this person actually knows that something is wrong. They know their relationships aren’t working the way they should, and they can feel that something is missing—but they can’t quite figure out what the problem is or why they keep having the same struggles with people. I started thinking about what it might feel like to be that person on the inside. What if they really do want things to change? What if they know they are hurting relationships, but don’t yet understand how their own behavior is contributing to it? That is where “This Bothers Me” came from. I also think many of us know someone who can be extremely self-centered or difficult to have a relationship with. Maybe while listening to this song, you’ll recognize someone in your own life—or maybe, in an unexpected way, recognize a little bit of yourself. This song isn’t meant to label or diagnose anyone. It’s simply an attempt to look at the situation from the other side and imagine what might be happening inside someone who is struggling to understand their own behavior.
