For more than a decade, the semiconductor industry operated under one simple assumption.
If you wanted to manufacture the world's most advanced chips, you needed one machine.
There were no shortcuts.
No alternatives.

That machine was ASML's extreme ultraviolet, or EUV, lithography system. Because while the world's attention was fixed on the machine China couldn't buy, China's largest chipmaker, SMIC, was quietly experimenting with the machines it already had.
