The Democratic Party has secured a majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Democrats have won 228 seats in the House against Republicans' 139, while securing 54 seats in the 100-member Senate compared to the Republicans' 44. The results mark a significant political setback for Trump, with Democratic candidates registering notable victories in key states, including Michigan, Texas and Wisconsin. Several Republican candidates also faced defeats in swing states that Trump had won in the 2024 presidential election. Reacting to the results, Trump said the outcome should not be viewed as a public verdict on his administration. He also indicated that opposition lawmakers could block bills in Congress by exercising their veto powers, signalling a possible political confrontation ahead.
