At 63, Dorothy walked away from a thirty-year teaching career and moved alone to the Philippines after losing her husband. She had researched the cost of living, visas, healthcare and expat life. She thought she knew what she was walking into. She didn't. What began with two suitcases, grief and a terrifying first night in Manila slowly challenged almost everything Dorothy believed about loneliness, independence, community—and even what it means to grow older. Then, fourteen months into her new life, she got dengue fever. Alone in a rented apartment and barely able to care for herself, the woman who had spent her entire adult life being independent suddenly needed other people. Who would show up when she could no longer manage on her own? Why would people who owed her nothing refuse to leave her alone?
