美 물가 예상치 상회, 연준 금리 압박 속 한국 성장 전망 개선
Welcome to Within The Frame, where we bring the most pressing issues across the globe into focus. I'm Kim Mok-yeon.
U.S. inflation is picking up again, raising fresh concerns over the Federal Reserve's next move on interest rates.
September's consumer price index rose 3.7 percent from a year earlier, beating market expectations, while the Fed's latest Beige Book points to mounting price pressures and signs of slowing economic growth.
The developments are adding to uncertainty over the Fed's next rate decision, with potential implications for Korea's currency and financial markets.
Meanwhile, there's a brighter outlook for the Korean economy, with both the OECD and IMF raising their growth forecasts.
Today, we examine what these developments mean for interest rates, financial markets, and the broader economic outlook.
For more on this, we are joined by Song Soo-young, Professor of Business and Economics at Chung-Ang University
Also joining us is Shin Se Don, Professor of Business Economics at Sookmyung Women's University. Good to see you.
1. (SONG) Let's begin with the latest U.S. inflation figures.
September's CPI rose 3.7 percent year-on-year, above expectations.
What's driving this renewed rise in inflation, and how concerned should we be?
2. (SHIN) Turning to the Federal Reserve, it raised interest rates in September for the first time since 2023. With inflation picking up again, do you expect another rate hike at the upcoming October meeting?
3. (SONG) Meanwhile, the Fed's latest Beige Book points to rising price pressures but weaker economic momentum.
How serious is the risk of stagflation in the U.S.?
4. (SHIN) Bringing this back to Korea, how could the Fed's interest-rate outlook affect the Korean won and financial markets?
5. (SONG) And turning to the Bank of Korea, how should it balance economic growth, inflation, and exchange-rate stability when making its next rate decision?
6. (SHIN) Now turning to Korea's economy, both the OECD and IMF have raised their growth forecasts.
What's behind these upgrades, and how significant are they?
7. (SONG) But despite the stronger outlook, many households and small businesses are still struggling.
Why isn't the economic recovery being felt more widely?
9. (SHIN) Finally, what should the government prioritize to turn this stronger growth outlook into a lasting recovery that benefits more people?
That will be all from us on Within the Frame.
Be sure to tune in next time as we continue to explore the stories that matter. Until then, stay informed and engaged!
