Every year, our MSc Earthquake Engineering and Infrastructure Resilience students visit a seismic region in Europe to learn how engineers have responded to the devastating impact of earthquakes through the careful design of buildings and local infrastructure.
Our 2024 cohort took a three-day trip to Italy to witness these impacts for themselves and shared their journey with us.
On day one, students visited L’Aquila, a historical city in the Abruzzo region which endured a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in 2009, Italy’s worst earthquake in 30 years. Since then, structural restorations and safety measures have been implemented to prevent further devastation.
On day 2, the group visited two significant new structures in the heart of Rome. Their first visit was to a seismically retrofitted steel bridge followed by a visit to St Peter’s Basilica, the most prominent building in the Vatican City, where a new tunnel is being constructed ahead of the 2025 Catholic Jubilee.
The students concluded their 3-day visit with a trip to EUCENTRE lab in Pavia, a private non-profit foundation which focuses on earthquake and risk engineering.
