The Devil's PunchBowl in Hindhead Surrey is a stunning natural amphitheatre that is filled with heathland, streams and woodland. It is also a site of special scientific interest. Owned by The national Trust (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/) it incorporates the Hindhead Commons, near the village of Hindhead. Hindhead used to be blighted by the A3 (the main road between London and Portsmouth) running right through, but now this traffic has been diverted into the Hindhead Tunnel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindhea... https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visi... The Devil's Punch Bowl has a fascinating history and legend - It is said that the Devil became so annoyed by the churches in Surrey that he decided to dig a channel to flood the area. He threw up huge lumps of earth, creating landmarks like the Cissbury Ring. He stopped at Poynings when he heard a cock crowing, thinking it was dawn. He left behind a large hollow, which is now 'The Devil's Punch Bowl'! :) https://surreyhills.org/places-to-see... The Devil's PunchBowl is also the site of a notorious murder in 1786, when an unknown sailor was killed by three men on Gibbet Hill, the highest point of the rim. The murderers were caught and hanged on a gibbet near the spot, where their bodies remained for years. A stone was erected in 1786 to mark the place of the murder, and another one in 1867 to commemorate the event. https://surreyhills.org/activity/sail...
