Discover the breathtaking ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Nestled in a peaceful valley in the North York Moors, this once-great Cistercian monastery was one of the most powerful and spiritually important religious houses in medieval England.
Founded in 1132 by monks from Clairvaux Abbey in France, on land given by Walter Espec, Rievaulx was the first Cistercian abbey in the north of England. Under its most famous abbot, St Aelred of Rievaulx (1147–1167), the community grew to around 650 people, 140 monks and more than 500 lay brothers. Making it a major centre of prayer, learning and influence across Britain.
For four centuries the abbey thrived. Its soaring Gothic church and extensive monastic buildings stood as a symbol of faith, discipline and architectural ambition. Then, on 3 December 1538, everything changed. As part of Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries, the remaining 22 monks were forced to surrender the abbey. The buildings were stripped of their lead roofs, bells and valuables, and much of the complex was deliberately dismantled. What had been a living centre of religious life was reduced to the haunting ruins we see today.
This film captures the quiet majesty of what remains, the elegant arches, the vast cloister, and the dramatic setting that still moves visitors almost 500 years later. A reminder of both the rich spiritual heritage of medieval England and the irreversible loss caused by the Dissolution.
