At a state mental hospital, detoxing in hospital pajamas with a broken denture and dirty feet, she refused an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting until a staff member told her the father of a famous movie star was speaking - and then made attendance nonoptional. The old man opened by calling the room a fine bunch of monkeys, but when he described looking into his wife and children's eyes and needing another drink, Rachel saw her mother's despair and felt something leave her. The speaker was Chuck C., and his message that he needed AA and people like her gave Rachel the first direction she could trust. Twenty-nine years later, after sponsorship, the Twelve Steps, and a life built inside the fellowship, Rachel describes reconnecting with her father, an invitation from her family, her mother's embrace, and the AA members she now recognizes as the hand of the God she had searched for all her life.
