Shield Dawn | Iron Twilight · Thermopylae, 480 BC

At Thermopylae, Kallista watches the Persian tide crush the limestone pass until her husband’s bronze shield shatters, scattering gleaming shards across the battlefield. She gathers the broken pieces, discovers a hidden tablet bearing the Persian king’s oath to spare any Spartan who returns the shield, and raises the oath as her own armor, forcing the invaders to pause. As the sun sinks behind the hot gates, her lone, star‑bright shield stands as a living promise over the stone. In history: Three hundred Spartans hold the pass against Persia — Thermopylae, 480 BC. I slip your arm beneath the cold bronze band Your pulse still hums against my open hand The Persian march grinds dust against the stone A war-axe cleaves the wood and cracks your collarbone The wood cracks; its bronze skin tears apart I bind those sunrise shards against my heart Shield Dawn, I wear your bronze and stay Though all our years are swept away, And hold you here against my chest Until these hands can give you rest I close your eyes before the light grows dim I knot my torn hem through the broken rim I shout your name; the spearheads turn and flare I lift your bronze and meet the soldiers' stare The wood cracks; its bronze skin tears apart I bind those sunrise shards against my heart Shield Dawn, I wear your bronze and stay Though all our years are swept away, And hold you here against my chest Until these hands can give you rest A hidden bronze tablet bears the royal seal His oath spares Spartans who return this shield I shout his oath where Persian archers stand Their captain stills their bowstrings with one hand Shield Dawn, I wear your bronze and stay Though all our years are swept away, And press his oath into my breast Until these hands can give you rest The sun sinks past the pines; I stand alone Your shield cradles a lone star over the stone --- About this work Iron Twilight is a hard-rock series of stories from Western history, each told through one woman who lived through it.
