After choosing a natural tree cavity, the female enters the nest and seals most of the entrance, leaving only a narrow opening. Inside, she lays a single egg and remains protected within the cavity. Outside, the male becomes the family’s lifeline. Day after day, he searches the rainforest for ripe figs, insects, and other suitable food, returning to pass meals through the narrow nest opening. Eventually, the egg hatches. A tiny helpless chick begins its transformation from a fragile newborn into a fully feathered juvenile. As weeks pass, its wings strengthen, its bill develops, and it begins preparing for life beyond the cavity.
