If you take the old dirt home, you can teach it how to leave. But it is right, and it is rote, it is all it’s meant to be, so don’t clip that birdie’s tongue, leave the talk to you and me. Let her breathe, let her sing! Cut no tongue, cut no wing! Be at peace, it’s all just everything! If you peel a birch’s bark, it might reveal a pretty green. If you hold a dream too tight, you are sure to make it mean. It is rite, and it is rote, it is all it wants to be, so you leave that tree its skin, leave the talk to you and me. Let it stand, let it sway! Blue by night, white by day! Let it be, go on your way! If you stir a sleeping man underneath the ancient oak, you can charm him with your wiles, you can make him all your own. But he is right, and he is wrote, he is just where he should be, so you let that rambler alone, and leave the loving to you and me. Let him sleep, let him dream! Let him lay low and sweet! Float a lullaby down on the stream! If you clip a magpie’s tongue, you can teach her how to speak. If you take the old dirt home, you can teach it how to leave. But she is rite, and she is rote, she is all she’s meant to be, so don’t clip that birdie’s tongue, leave the talk to you and me.
